Known as the "Heart of Chinatown," Portsmouth Square has seen many historical events in the plaza. It was the spot where the US flag was first raised in San Francisco and on May 11, 1848, the discovery of gold was announced to a crowd, sparking the California Gold Rush. Dirty Harry had some seens filmed there and it is a favorite spot for locals to play chess and majong. The Portsmouth Square Parking Garage was developed by Chinatown business and community leaders in 1960 in response to the growing need for a parking garage in the neighborhood.

This presentation shovel was awarded to Albert C. Lim, who evidently was kind of a big deal: Past President, Chinese Historical Society of America; Past President, Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association; Past Vice President, Chinese Chamber of Commerce; Former Member, San Francisco Asian Art Commission.
